How to Afford Sustainable Style

Sustainable Style made Affordable

Sustainable style is known for being 'more expensive'- that's in quotations because expense is a point of view. The intent of sustainable and ethical fashion is to be stylish while also making sure the supply chain is transparent: from procuring materials that won't harm the environment to paying living wages to the garment workers. When we think about cost, we understand that we are in a symbiotic relationship with the people who make the clothes and our money is a tangible expression of our desire for equity. That being said, many sustainable and ethical fashion brands understand that we have been trained by fast fashion and we love the idea of getting a 'deal'. So, hip hip hooray, let's do After Pay! This is an interest free, get-it-now-pay-later- payment plan! It is a win-win for you and for the brands.

This is how it works: You put an item in your cart then choose how you are going to pay (credit card, money app, etc). Now, select After Pay. You will be directed to a new site once you have put in your CC or money app credentials. After Pay will break your payments up into four smaller increments. The item will be shipped to you according to your shipping options. Read: you get the item before you finish paying for it. If the price of sustainable and ethical fashion has felt out of reach, use this updated version of lay away to help you afford pieces that are good for you, good for the environment and good for the garment workers.

Take a look at all of the different brands and items you can purchase in this way, from swimsuits to boots After Pay has you covered!

Learn More About Professor Kendi

Ibram X. Kendi is a #1 New York Times best selling author (How to be an Antiracist, STAMPED, Racism, Antiracism and You) and the founding Director of The Antiracist Research & Policy Center at American University in Washington D.C. Starting in July he will become the Professor of History and the Founding Director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist research.

I recently had the good fortune of being a guest at an event where Professor Kendi spoke to me and a group of my colleagues. His clear ideas on how to move forward in a world focused on inclusion and the active work we can all do towards anti-racism are a breath of fresh air. As a historian, he outlines where we are in an historical context and passes along words of hope. I found a podcast interview with him on goop where you can hear his words.
